The Intergenerational Cooking Show (2025)
in collaboration with Kiriko Mechanicus
Presentation Holland Festival
The Intergenerational Cooking Show is a collaboration with Kiriko Mechanicus.
It is a video-concept where grandparents are invited to cook with their grandchildren while filming the moment with GoPro cameras attached to their head. Together, they prepare a meal that held significance in the grandparent’s life at the age their grandchild is now.
The dish helps to start conversations about intergenerational topics such as war, heritage, gender dynamics, and the passage of time.
What is (not) said through these dishes? The footage draws us into the same moment, seen from two perspectives: intimate diptychs separated by sixty years and half a meter.
The first iteration of the project was developed for an exhibition in Kyoto. For this, we sent a package with instructions and GoPro cameras around the Netherlands and Japan. In the exhibition, photographs of the kitchens were printed on large textiles, and the accompanying footage was shown on screens.
The footage we received fascinated us with its intimacy and diversity. In this case, we see value in quantity, and therefore aim to develop the project into a methodology that can collect footage from across the globe.
We are currently in development of a world tour, with a travelling exhibition and an online platform offering a window into kitchens and recipes from all over the world.
